Accounting software you own, not rent
LineLedger exists because the books that run a business shouldn’t cost more than the business — and because nobody should have to rent access to their own ledger.
Most accounting software asks you to rent access to your own financial data — and to trust a black box for the math. LineLedger takes the opposite approach: a proper double-entry accounting application that is honestly priced, open source, and transparent from the ledger up.
It’s a real, working app — chart of accounts, invoicing, estimates, sales orders, sales receipts, bills, purchase orders, vendor credits, recurring documents, opt-in payment reminders, a customer portal with Stripe online payments, bank reconciliation, multi-currency, classes & locations, inventory, fixed assets with depreciation, VAT at HMRC’s rates with a VAT Return that works out all nine boxes from the ledger, fund accounting with restricted funds for charities and clubs, budgets, drill-through financial reports, multi-company books, passkey sign-in with per-member access control, portable backups, a Business Q&A MCP server for AI agents, a REST API, a full audit log, daily AI insights, email-in receipt capture, and a public verification page. A UK organization starts in pounds on an April year end, with HM Revenue & Customs as its VAT agency — or Isle of Man Customs and Excise for a Manx company.
There’s even a QuickBooks importer so you can bring your history across. All of it is published so anyone can read exactly how a modern accounting system is structured — and the accounting proofs ship with it, so you can run them on your own install and download the evidence.
How we fund it. We don’t — there’s nothing to fund. LineLedger is AGPLv3 software we wrote and gave away. No plans, no seats, no upsell, no hosted tier, no telemetry, and no data to resell — your books run on your server and never reach us at all. A business, a charity, and a hobby club all pay exactly the same: nothing.
LineLedger 1.2.0 was released on October 18, 2026, nine weeks after 1.0.0 went public on August 15, 2026. It taught the app to speak French — the screens, your documents, your emails and both portals — and added United Kingdom organizations, with pounds, an HMRC VAT chart and a VAT Return worked out from the books. Tax returns now reconcile to the ledger before you file them, and a customer’s overpayment can be refunded straight from the invoice. See what’s new, the changelog for everything in the box, or the upgrade notes if you’re already running it.
Licensed under the AGPLv3
In plain English: you're welcome to read this code, run it yourself, modify it, and share your modifications — but if you run a modified version as a network service for others, you must release your source under the same license. That keeps LineLedger open for everyone.
