Features
A complete double-entry accounting toolkit — and because it's open source, you can see exactly how every feature works.
LineLedger 1.2.0
Released October 18, 2026. The highlights are below, and all of it is in the version you install today. The changelog lists everything else, fixes included.
LineLedger speaks French
The app, your invoices and statements, your emails and both portals run in French. Each person picks their own language, an organization has a document language, and a customer can have their own — their documents, emails and portal follow it. A new Québec organization starts in French. Most report PDFs are still English.
United Kingdom & the VAT Return
UK organizations join Canada and the United States: pounds sterling, an April fiscal year, an HMRC chart and VAT codes, a Companies House number beside the VAT number on your invoices, and day-first dates. A VAT Return works out all nine boxes from the books — you copy them into your Making Tax Digital software, because LineLedger does not file for you.
Tax returns that tie to the ledger
A draft return now takes adjustments — a collector’s commission, a bank fee, a balance carried from an earlier period — and sits beside the agency’s payable account so you can see the difference before you file. A return that disagrees with the ledger files only once you accept that difference.
Refund an overpayment from the invoice
When a customer pays twice, the extra stays as credit on their account. Refund it straight from the invoice: record the card refund you put through your terminal, or write a draft refund cheque. No credit memo, revenue untouched, and the invoice stays paid by its original payment.
Close the books without boxing yourself in
The lock date can warn and confirm instead of refusing outright, and every override is recorded in the audit log. A reconciliation now protects the lines it ticked rather than every date it covered, so a July adjusting entry still posts after the bank is reconciled through September.
Faster forms
Every line’s account picker is a search box: type “24” for the 2400s, or “bmo usd” for the account by name. Drag a line column to resize it, open an account’s general ledger straight from ⌘K search, and send customer statements from a page of their own with balance-forward and column choices.

VAT
VAT done properly, from the codes on a line to the return at quarter end.

- Your VAT number, checked for the GB format, printed on every sales document beside your company number
- Adjust a draft return — a bank fee, a balance carried forward
- Reconcile the return to the VAT payable account before you file
- Sales tax report with drill-down, and period-lock snapshots on every filed return
VAT Return for HMRC
The nine boxes, worked out from your ledger rather than retyped from it.
- Boxes 1–5 in pence, boxes 6–9 in whole pounds, straight from the books
- Agrees to the penny with the tax return for the same period, exclusions and adjustments included
- Filing freezes the boxes on the return, with a period-lock snapshot behind them
- Export the boxes to CSV, then submit through your Making Tax Digital software — LineLedger does not file for you
- Boxes 2, 8 and 9 read zero: the books do not separate Northern Ireland and EU goods
- The Flat Rate Scheme, cash accounting and the reverse charge are not worked out for you
Works with your payroll provider
LineLedger keeps the books; your payroll software keeps paying people.
- Run payroll wherever you do today and post each pay run as a journal entry: wages, PAYE and NI withheld, and the employer’s share
- Keep the payroll report or PDF in the documents vault, attached to the entry
- Pay HMRC from the books like any other liability
- LineLedger has no UK payroll of its own — no PAYE, no RTI, no CIS, and none planned. Payroll software stays payroll software.
Charities, clubs & fund accounting
When you flip the org type to non-profit or charity, the books reshape to match.
- Net-asset subtypes (unrestricted / temporarily restricted / endowment)
- Statements of operations & changes in net assets
- Restricted funds with interfund transfers
- Track donations, pledges and campaigns by fund (Gift Aid claims are not handled)
- Free to run, like every other part of it
Classes & locations
Slice the P&L by segment, not just by company.
- Tag any transaction line with a class or location
- Roll up profitability by segment
- Available on every income & expense doc
Multi-company, three countries
One login, many sets of books — and they don’t all have to be in one country.
- Belong to one or more companies
- Canadian, US and UK organizations side by side, each with its own chart, tax codes and currency
- Guided company onboarding
- Combined reports across companies

Bring your history with you — no fresh start required.

The small things that make the books actually pleasant to keep.
- In-cell calculator (+ − × ÷) on every amount field
- Sidebar adding-machine with tape
- Duplicate any deposit, bill, invoice, cheque or journal entry
- Edit posted deposits and cheques in place — without breaking the chain
- Escape goes back, and banking screens remember your last account
- Type a GL number or a name to pick any line’s account
- Drag a line column to the width you want; it stays that way
